St Mark's Gospel
What is a "gospel"?
The word "gospel" comes from an Old English word godspellere, which means "good news". St Mark's Gospel begins with the following statement: "The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God." (1:1) So, what was newsworthy about Jesus and why was it good? To answer these questions we need to visit the world in which the Gospel of Mark was written.
